This piece was created after a long absence due to both the need to focus on a family situation, and a spur-of-the-moment sailboat trip to Panama. Once back in the studio, Dessie didn’t skip a beat in finding the majestic raven hidden in the veins and form of a leaf she had brought from Mexico. She debated over whether or not to carve out the detail on the bird’s body, but in the end the remarkable featherlike pattern demanded to be painstakingly shown. Once finished, the artist placed the piece under glass in the sunlight for weeks, to bleach out the color so as to mount the leaf on a background of black fading into a bluish grey.
