Species: Fiddle-leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata)/Dimensions: 27.8 x 21.3cm

While on a leaf-hunting stroll on the mountainside above Puerto Vallarta, the artist was pleasantly surprised to find a type of tree she had never seen before. The leaves were large and shaped like skulls, which may have been somewhat disturbing to some. For Dessie, they instantly brought to mind the traditional Mexican calavera, or sugar skull, associated with the Day of the Dead. She was excited at the prospect of creating such traditional Mexican art with a different medium and enjoyed the process so much she created two, using different designs from her own imagination.
